Your Eyes in SPACE

April 29th, 2014

By Billy Kaplan

It’s been a few weeks since the Parenting in SPACE gathering, and I wanted you to know that I’m thinking about you. A lot.

Billys IntroI’m thinking about your eyes.  I’m thinking about how, when you first walked into the room for the opening program, your eyes were full of apprehension, and hurt, and anger, and distrust that anything I could say, or anything any of the folks from Chaddock or House Calls Counseling could say, would make any difference in your life or the lives of your children.

I’m thinking about how your eyes scanned the room, anticipating the negative judgment from others that has so often comes your way.  And how you looked at the other “SPACE travelers,” at the other people in the room, and how you looked like you felt so alone.

And I spoke a few words of greeting, which you thought were nice enough.

Laughing in SPACE 2014And then Pete started improv. And your eyes were like, “What in the world is this? Why are we doing this?” And then you started laughing. Laughing until tears rolled down your face. And your eyes were then like, “Oh yeah, that feeling, it’s feeling ‘good.’ I remember that.”

And then we began to become a community, sharing in the joys and sorrows of the healing-journey for our kids. And our selves.

Fast forward to the final Parent Community, the small gathering of parents and “professionals” in which we came together periodically throughout the conference.

And then I looked in your eyes again. Oh, how they changed from the first time I saw you.

The main difference: hope. And then: connection, knowledge, self-awareness.

And you had me at hope.

Happy togetherAnd I knew that all we had given, all that we from House Calls Counseling and Chaddock had done to prepare, ALL that hard work and effort paid off in riches beyond our wildest imaginations, and surpassing OUR greatest hopes.

Thank you for trusting us on this journey.

(And see you again next year!)
